LESSONS OF DARKNESS (Werner Herzog, 1992, 54min)
Visionary filmmaker Werner Herzog and cinematographer Paul Barriff constructed this documentary from footage they shot in Kuwait after the first Gulf War. The film focuses on the ecological destruction and ensuing emotional toll, which includes burning oil fields, deserts strewn with military debris and people no longer able to speak from the horrors they were forced to endure. What results is a condemnation of man’s insane desire to destroy the world. This evening’s 35mm presentation of LESSONS OF DARKNESS is sponsored by the Clio Society.
