June 11, 2003: DARK DAYS - Location: Block Museum of Art

A documentary about people who live underground in the tunnels of the New York City subway system. Despite their seemingly desperate living conditions, many build fully functioning houses…particularly interesting is a scene early on where a man explains his situation while shaving with an electric razor. Shattering many myths about homelessness, the film follows its subjects’ eventual transition into public housing. (2000, 94 min.) Director Mark Singer, who lived underground with his subjects during the filming, will be present for discussion. This event continues Reeltime’s collaboration with the Playboy Foundation in showcasing recipients of their Freedom of Expression Award.

Winner: Freedom of Expression, Audience, and Cinematography Awards at the 2000 Sundance Film Festival.
