PREVIEW! AMANDLA! presents the extraordinary role of freedom songs in South Africa’s long struggle against apartheid. The film uses a mix of interviews with previously exiled activists and musicians, combined with archival footage of organized protests. Contemporary South African musicians also attest the continued legacy of these brave individuals. Joining us for a discussion after the film will be ethnomusicologist Johann Buis, who is currently at work on a companion book with director Lee Hirsch. (2003, 108min) AMANDLA! marks our third in a series generously sponsored by the Hugh M. Hefner Foundation in screening winners of Playboy’s Freedom of Expression Award, which was given annually at the Sundance Film Festival.
